How can Architecture be a teaching tool for the natural and built environments? Through the design of The Sun School for Environmental studies involving the integration of a building’s site, photovoltaic technology, daylighting, and natural ventilation, how can Architecture encourage a building to teach about itself? How can a building respond to its occupants, and to sun, wind, daylight and temperature? How can Architecture encourage the occupants to interact with the building, learn about it, respond to it, and consequently to increase their awareness of it? Decades of accommodating the automobile have dramatically transformed the shape and the quality of our physical environment. The typical suburban retail parking lot is one symptom of our automobile dependence. Frequently the proposed solutions to sprawl development tend to minimize the economic and marketing appeal of a large surface parking lot. For many communities, the anticipated economic benefit and convenience of a suburban retail development overcomes any reservations about the appearance and effect of the associated sea of asphalt. A more achievable design goal might be a pedestrian-oriented parking lot. Is that feasible? What present and future advantages might be gained? What would it be like? This thesis studies the typical commercial surface parking lot through observation and analysis, leading to the design of an infrastructural system of elements to develop pedestrian-oriented parking lots. An exploration of the meaning behind the words idea, form, making and experience begins to unite the intellect of an architect with the design of an architect. The terms are defined in the thesis and explained through the project. The thesis through the project sets out to take these terms beyond mere words and give them an opportunity to inform eachother. It is this dialectic between idea, form, making and experience that I believe to be the heart of architecture. Idea and form are inextricably tied to one another. ?Which is the origin of the other?? is not as pertinent a question as ?how do the two inform each other??. Ideas change from project to project as do the forms inherent in those ideas. Preceeding both idea and material form is another type of form that is immaterial and often remains unseen. It is the character which is essential to a thing. Whether it be a place or an ******************, it is the quality in the thing itself. This character is the instigator of idea and form. It is the architect?s goal to make this inherent form perceivable. An architect makes idea and form manifest through a concept of making. In Notes for a Theory of Making in a Time of Necessity, Giuseppe Zambonini emphasizes that ?We must look not only at the quality of the material used and at the craft employed, but also at the quality of the thought process selecting and shaping the material. . .quality cannot be an intrinsic condition that belongs to the ****************** . . . but rather it must express the intent by which it is created and therein the clarity and strength of the meaning being produced by its form? (Zambonini, 21). This quality of design can best be achieved the earlier making and materiality are involved in the design process. The questions of ?what is the form of this idea?? and ?how is this form to be made?? begin the relationship between idea, form and making. The immediate responses may be intuitive, but the final one is the resultof numerous makings. This is why architecture is practiced. When the question arises:?how can this form not only em************ an idea but be the idea??, the dialogue takes on a greater import. The way in which a thing will be experienced starts to inform its making. ?It is the process that will engage both user and observer in an active, participating relationship with the work and thereby give the work its meaning? (Zambonini, 21). It is at this point that the dialectic is fully engaged. These four aspects simultaneously inform each other and nurture the project throughout its life, from drawing board, to construction to the various experiences that it will impart. It is not just one aspect, but these four in communion that are the architecture. For my project I designed an art gallery located in Georgetown Washington DC which is composed of three layers: a structural layer, an environmental casing, and an outer layer. Theoretical parallels are drawn between the outer layer of the gallery and what is commonly referred to as a mask. Additionally, I explored the interaction between the layers of the gallery. The distinguishing characteristics of the building include the tri-fa硤e mask, the unique spaces in between the gallery?s layers, the glass system, the mask?s ghost effect, and the floor system. The drastic economical changes that occurred there had a large influence on the architecture of the Island. My thesis is a study of the changes that occurred to the architecture of Bahrain over the past thirty five years. It is also a design of a modern house in Bahrain that does not neglect the traditional architectural values of the country. In my work I focused on using geometry and geometrical proportions which in turn unifies the different parts of the house in harmony. This study acknowledges a cultural and architectural crisis that exists today in most of the developing world as well as in Jordan. It is focused on three pertinent aspects, technology, time, and form, which havebecome diverse and contradictory in ways unprecedented in history. Technology by definition is a set of methods a society employs to satisfy its building requirements. In the past a state of harmony existed between incoming values and technology, because of the slow interaction which allowed the receiving culture sufficient time for adaptation. In such cultures with rich architectural tradition and heritage, the main reason for the gap between existing and incoming cultures is that they did not prepare to absorb western exported aesthetic values and technology. The main cause of this is during this century modern technology has become too advanced to be compatible with the capability of local building technology, and the local tradition no longer has the economic appeal it had before. The need for rapid and large scale advancement in the developing countries was made possible by modern technology, not just for its economic appeal but also for the prestige it carries with it. Nowadays, Jordan among other nations contains a cultural heritage, and an architectural legacy of great value that is suffering from imported architectural fashions. However, the problem is that it fails to distinguish aesthetic values of western architecture when implementing them into its culture. It was my intention throughout my studies to create a bridge between western architectural technology and traditional architectural forms and technology in Jordan. Silence, Darkness and Light The Grand Egyptian Museum Type of ************************ : Master's Thesis Author : Ali, Ahmed Kamal Author's Email Address : [عزيزي الزائر يتوجب عليك التسجيل لمشاهدة الرابط للتسجيل اضغط هنا] URN : etd-03012004-162839 Title : Silence, Darkness and Light The Grand Egyptian Museum Degree : Master of Architecture Department : Architecture Date of Defense : 2003-06-11 :Abstract How can the unique legacy of the most ancient of civilizations be represented within a single building? How can one building spans the area between heaven and earth, the space described in the cosmology of our pharonic ancestors? Certainly, to design such a building is a unique challenge, and an unprecedented opportunity, on this most privileged of sites in the history of mankind, that a museum is to be constructed capable of linking the immemorial past with the distant future spanning both the horizons of the ancients and those as yet unseen. Through the investigation of phenomenology, geometry, simplicity, purity and light, listening to the voice of silence, emerging to the light from the darkness, and by understanding the strength of simplicity after passing through complexity, This thesis offers an endless stream of ideas that challenge the mind. The vision for the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) is to establish a place where people from different nations and cultures will be able to immerse themselves in the rich culture heritage from more than 5.000 years of Egyptian civilization. With the support of new technology, more effective and efficient dissemination of information can be achieved, enabling the New Museum to be a source of enjoyable, entertaining, educational and cultural experiences for all visitors. This project aims at structuring a complex of exhibits and facilities, which will accommodate all Pharaonic periods, it will be the largest museum in the world, and will provide access to information and future knowledge. It results from the careful articulation of the problem and a subsequent ordering of constraints within the con************ of the competition proposal. As a threshold of first impressions, the airport should not only introduce the visitor to the local environment but also represent the identity of a country. The aim of this thesis project is to design an airport terminal that reflects the natural and cultural environments of the islands of the Bahamas. Through its architecture, this building attempts to create an engaging experience for its users: passengers, employees and visitors. Local culture and sense of place are abstracted through architectural ideas, realized in the ************************ of con************ual modernism. The synthesis of the themes and concepts explored throughout the design process are presented through drawings and commentary. Precedents such as the Taino cosmos, color and nature, place and culture are used to inspire structural systems, form and aesthetics. The plan of the new airport terminal fulfils the functional program while interpreting the land and sea formations of the Bahama islands; ocean currents and land-sea patterns may be associated with movements of people and machines, converging and diverging within the airport environment. Yes! I call it *******ed Architecture. This Architecture is not just about a space, but the art of space. Art is the application or exhibition of skills, aesthetic principles, and creative imagination in the production of the beautiful and the meaningful. Art will appeal to different senses. There is the art of ***************ng with the wonderful tastes and smells. There is the art of music pleasing to ears and spirit, and the art of painting, so inspiring to look at. Imagine living in an artistic space that pleases all the senses! A space with all these virtues becomes The Space, unique, remembered and desired. It is very difficult to clearly determine how people feel about space. It is not something you calculate easily, as you do with numbers. Even the most precise de******************ion, listing all visible features, will not give an inkling of what we feel is the essence of the space. Architecture provides not only new ways of considering form, but of linking form to physical *******, expanding the possibilities of Architecture as multi sensory Architecture that engages all the senses, such as sight, sound, touch, smell and taste, etc. The human need for sensory engagement is shown by the curiosity of young children, which overwhelms any sense of fear. As we age, our sensory needs remain, but our experience ************d caution keeps us from touching the fire. Out senses are deeply intertwined. Each sense contributes to the fuller comprehension of other sensory information. In the design process, Architects continuously seek the line that is more pleasing, the just-right palette, and the most perfect overall impact or contribution of the building to its environment. While still on paper, architects must travel through the space in their mind?s eye, imagining reality fulfilling the desires of all senses. Architects are constantly seeking opportunities to establish the sense of love between space and its users. At the end of the day we hope to have discovered and orchestrated the dimensions that engage all senses ? in a way that pleases, lingers, and ultimately leaves us satisfied. This is truly *******ed Architecture! However, the man-made landscape is just as worthy of preservation/reuse. Buildings represent a ************************ from their past, portraying the builder?s concerns and values. Buildings express their characteristics in time, space, and social con************. Their presence and conversely, their absence, have a direct impact on their surroundings. Architecture has been continually enriched through change and dialogue, such as additions, interventions, and renovations of existing buildings. Many buildings exist today that have been poorly maintained, abandoned or the building has been demolished. This has led to the slow deterioration of the basic urban fabric and its framework, causing the overall quality and character of the building and/or its surroundings to become depressing and unattractive. By rejuvenating/preserving the total environment, as well as, implementing the current design trends, life and history is restored. The challenge and goal of my thesis is to illustrate the positive effect this transformation cycle has on an urban space. I propose to renovate the historic Norfolk and Westerm Passenger Train Station located in downtown Roanoke, Virginia, and design an addition onto the building. The train station will serve as a cultural center for the city of Roanoke. By researching and analyzing the history and formal implications of the passenger train station, a sense of harmony, balance, and unity is achieved with the new function of the old space, and therefore, the quality of the existing building is enhanced. It is often a compacted form, divided only by changing facades and party walls. Boxes all in rows. There is an inescapable sense of enclosure. Architecture has the potential to unlock the box, allowing interaction between inside and out. The opening, be it a ******************, skylight, or void, becomes the way that the interior and exterior inform one another. The opening must not only relate to the street and city, but also to the sky and sun. It is an intangible element, created by the form and material that reside in proximity to it. Experiencing the intangible allows a connection to be made with the nature of the site. The opening, generated by form, mass, and material, in turn generates, through visual interaction and the play of light, space that informs and transcends.
